Here's my opinion:

#1. Cliff is the most important.
Everyone can agree that Cliff is the MOST important Bassist to play in the band.
Two of the 4 most important Metallica albums featured Cliff & his contributions. Those being
Kill 'em All and Master Of Puppets. Cliff also exposed the band to different styles of music
so with out Cliff there is no Metallica, hands down...God Bless Mr. Cliff Burton.

#2. Rob is the perfect fit (today).
Rob has huge credentials from Suicidal Tendencies > Infectious Grooves > Jerry Cantrell's Band > Black Label Society > Ozzy > Metallica.
He stepped in when the band needed his energy the most. He has given them
a fire and even a sense of youth (even though he's no younger than the rest of the band).
Rob can also be credited as part of the Metallica rebirth which points back to the Cliff topic. Rob
has contibuted to one of the 4 most important Metallica albums...Death Magnetic.

#3. Jason is Metallica.
Jason contributed to more albums, more shows, more Metallica than Rob or Cliff.
Jason's recordings have more sales than the others. He was with the band longer than
Rob or Cliff. With the highest respect to all bassists and the unfortunate circumstances,
facts are facts. Jason was with the band at it's break into the 'mainstream' and carried on
through the most popular and highest selling albums along with the bands most experimental
stages. Look the Jason catalog:
Garage Days Re-Revisited
...And Justice For All
Metallica
Load
Reload
Garage, Inc.
S&M
With the exception that Load & Reload could easily be a double-album and GDR-R appears on Garage, Inc.
Every one of these albums has a distinct sound, feel and creative energy.

Probably the phrase that best ends all debate:
Jason & The Black Album
Most die-hard 'Tallica fans won't admit it, but The Black Album
is the most important Metallica album to date. With no Black Album, there is no Death Magnetic,
no S&M, no Hall Of Fame....no Robert.

#4. Let us not forget Ron McGovney (Early Demo) & of course Bob Rock (St. Anger) both of which helped shape the band as well.

Cliff, Jason & Rob have each help formed what is Metallica. Everyone in the band, past and present can not argue that
each has supplied an unmeasurable amount of talent and contributions to the MOST IMPORTANT recordings in
Heavy Metal History (Kill 'em All, Master Of Puppets, The Black Album & Death Magnetic).

Let's just agree that James & Lars have a great ear and eye for amazing band members.
