The Rockin' Fender Skirts opened for
Blue Oyster Cult. They were sort of
a 50s-style band from Chicago and were
NOT recorded.

This is the COMPLETE concert except for a tape flip.
I don't believe that any music was lost. TT: 90:32.
I'm grading this (as always, "IMHO") as a vg+ to ex-
tape, 8.5-9/10; see reasons below...
This is the RAW MASTER RECORDING. NO EQing or anything else
has been done to alter the sound.
Lineage:

I arrived at the venue fairly early on Saturday, April 13,
1996. Shades was a nightclub out in the middle of nowhere.
I got the last parking spot in the lot and a tree branch
was pushing into my windshield after I parked. I bought my
ticket at the door for $10 and entered the club where the
people were packed in like sardines. I was lucky to find a
standing space near the bathroom fairly close to the
bathroom door. There was barely room to breathe, let alone
move. When the intro music started, I sadly discovered that
there were three types of people in the audience: people who
never stopped talking to each other, people who yelled and
screamed very loudly and people like me who were dedicated,
well-mannered music fans there to hear an excellent band. I
was VASTLY outnumbered. There were maybe 25 fans like me in
attendance ; the rest were loudmouth asshole screamers and
yellers and non-stop talkers. Attendance was no more than 200
people, if that ; Shades was a small club. I've been stealth-
taping for over 20 years now and have been to well over 1000
concerts. This show's audience is one of the 5 WORST audiences
that I've ever had the misfortune to witness. A bunch of people
must've escaped from the Chicago Institute for the Deaf that night
and arrived at Shades as several assclowns (male and female) kept
screaming all night at the band to "turn it up" !! I had earplugs
in and it sounded plenty loud to me. As I said, there was absolutely
NO way to get away from these fuckheads because of the packed
house so I had to suffer. One asshole repeatedly screamed very
close to my microphone so I had to edit him out several times.
One idiot kept talking to a guy named Carl. Another older asshole
kept talking to his friend about nothing. You'll hear all of these
motherfuckers in their glory when you listen to this tape. I
listened to this on headphones once all the way through when I
recorded the show onto my ZOOM H2 and came to the conclusion that
I would have to edit out as much screaming as possible to make this
show a pleasant document to hear. That's exactly what I did and it
took me ~ 3 hours. I had to leave a bit of the bullshit in because
some music was audible during some screaming but I cut out a lot of
crap that totally drowned out the music. When someone screamed, it
activated the squelch circuitry in my deck and the recording level
dropped for just a second and then returned to the factory-set
level. You'll hear several parts where the music gets quiet for just
a moment ; you'll know then that the scream was just before that
volume drop. I got lucky because every edit is seamless. The show
is now enjoyable and I think that you'll all like it. The sad thing
is that if the audience had been quiet, this recording would've been
a straight ex-. But assholes fuck everything up for everybody so that's
the way that life is. The rant is almost over...
Uncle Jojo likes to reward people who are kind to him by doing something
nice for them. He also likes to reward shitheads who fuck him over. Like
the assholes in this audience. I like to reward them with humiliation
and derision. That's why my final sound sample will consist of a complete
compilation of all of the audio shit that I excised from this recording.
You'll hear The Braying Bitch. You'll thrill to the sounds of the Turn-It-Up
Morons. You'll be awestruck at The Bleating Bastard. I don't know why these
fuckheads paid $10 to see this show because they sure weren't there for the
music !!! Well, enough ranting and raving. AFA the recording is concerned,
there is no: hiss, distortion or speed fluctuation. Eric Bloom's stage
banter is often difficult to decipher because of the constant talking in
the audience. The signal is pretty strong though, so you'll be able to
hear the music and vocals. That's about all that I have so let's get this
show on the golden road to spiritual enlightenment...
In conclusion, I read through this diatribe and it sounds like I'm saying
that this is a very bad-sounding concert. THAT IS NOT THE CASE !!! It's
actually quite good. It's just that there is a constant low-level drone
of talking mixed in with occasional loud shouts, comments and yelling.
The worst crap has been edited out. You'll hear all that noise in the
final sample. Listen to the 3 sound samples to get an accurate idea of
what this show really sounds like ; I think that you'll be impressed. But
you can be the judge. This audio document is COMPLETELY uncirculated and
I don't believe that any other tapers were there. I could be wrong but
I've never seen this show on any list and never saw it for sale at any
record shows. Hey, remember those ?? So grab it if you want it and if
not, just pass it by (to paraphrase the Grateful Dead).
If you're a BOC fan, you NEED this tape. A very high-energy show in
which everybody shines. I will post samples shortly for those of
you still undecided, but I think you'll find that this is a pretty
good-sounding tape even after all that I've said and a fine addition
to any Blue Oyster Cult fan's collection. Well, thanks for reading this
and Mr. Natural would like to add these few comments: have fun, don't
freak out and by all means, enjoy the concert!!!
If you were at this show and would like to share your memories, chime
in by all means !
