First time proper transfer to CD - April 2012

Master Cassette>Playback on JVC TD-W709>
Tascam DR-1>Hard Drive>flac

From what I can tell, this recording has never been on Dime before.
Check out the samples in the "comments" section.

This is one of only thirteen shows from the very first Down tour, ever. The NOLA CD was released exactly one week prior to this show. This is back when Todd Strange was playing bass. Because of the low-key way they started the band, Down was still largely unknown, still very fittingly "underground". If one of the members had not been from a high-profile band at that moment, there likely might have been about 30 people at this gig.

This recording was never properly transferred to CD until this year(2012), and only a few cassette copies were traded out "back in the day". By the time Down got bigger, I'd stopped trading, for the most part. Also, copies traded out before were likely missing the first song, for reasons you will read about further on. So this is the one and only complete source for this show.

Three memories from this show. One is also an explanation.
First off, I had to leave Jerry B. behind in Dayton, because after calling the venue, I realized that I needed to leave before he was going to be ready. I know he was crushed, but I barely made it as it was. I also know that, as a taper, he understands.
Secondly, I was totally slammed in the pit for the first one-third of the first song. I had seriously misjudged the crowd that evening. I figured that with the musical style of the Down CD, plus the bands influences(Trouble, Candlemass, St. Vitus), along with the covers they were playing(Sabbath, St. Vitus), would add up to a traditional, head-banging type crowd. I was wrong, big time! The crowd was 90% Pantera fans, and 50% of those were ready slam. So the fact that I thought that I could record from the very middle of the floor, about 20 feet from the stage, is pretty funny in hindsight. But at the moment, it was a giant bummer. You can hear how good and balanced it sounds as Phil addresses Cleveland at the beginning. So, to lose that spot sucked. Fortunately, after my "displacement", I was able to find another sweet sounding spot, where I could record safely. So, the beginning of "Hail The Leaf" starts out great until the drums kick in, and then you hear me getting slammed while trying to protect my recorder, and keep it from hitting the floor. Then the recorder shuts off. When I get out of the pit, I turn it back on, and you hear me searching for another spot. I finally find it at the end of the first song, and from there on out, the recording is really, really nice. Check the samples to hear what I mean.
The last memory is of leaving the building, and seeing two bouncer/security guys wrestling the guy through the door. When they got him outside, they beat they living crap out of this guy, including slamming his head against the concrete. Even if he deserved rough treatment, he didn't deserve that. That was the worst violence that I've ever seen at a concert. I have no idea what happened to that guy, but those two goons should have been arrested. I understand the "heat of the moment", but if you have no self-restraint, you should suffer the consequences.
