For all wondering "What is THIS???", well, you're in for a very unique show. If you haven't heard of them, Beatallica is a "mash-up" band that combines the songs and styles of The Beatles and Metallica to create some very catchy and clever songs. Unlike bands like The Punkles, who play their own versions of Beatles songs, these are original compositions that, if you know both bands well, are a lot of fun to hear.
A brief history - the band hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin where every year bands perform at a festival called Spoofest. Bands would dress up as different artists and perform their songs as many tribute bands do. For the 2001 festival, "Jaymz" and original lead guitarist "KRK" decided to answer the question "What would Metallica do for something like this?". As a result, they recorded seven Beatles songs played in the style of Metallica with Metallica-influenced lyrics. They distributed copies of the CD at the festival with a modest reaction.
About a year and a half later, the host of a Beatles internet radio show found out about these songs and played them on his radio show one week. The songs received a HUGE response, with many people writing in asking for more. The host eventually contacted "Jaymz" (real name Mike Tierney) who told him that he really didn't have a band and they were just demos. After seeing the fan response, "Jaymz" and crew recorded another EP of similar songs simply called Beatallica (also known as the Grey Album) and released them in MP3 format for free on their website in 2004.
Things were going well as word spread about the band and their new songs. In 2005, however, the band received a cease and desist order from Sony due to the band's merchandising that they felt was infringement on the Beatles name. Believe it or not, but who came to the band's rescue but Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich himself. By that time, interviewers were asking Metallica themselves if they had heard about the band, and after hearing the songs, they liked what they heard. To make a long story short, Lars offered to provide legal assistance, the band were signed to a record label, and everything was settled so they can continue and record their first CD, "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band", which was released in 2007. Their latest CD, "Masterful Mystery Tour", came out in August of 2009, which was proceeded by two other EPs.
Now for the show itself - I put two ratings on here because I was in two different locations during the show (long story). I started in the back of the club and moved to the front of the stage halfway through the first song, so you'll hear the sound get better at that point. After "I'll Just Bleed Your Face", I moved back again, so the songs after that are a little more muffled than the rest. Other than that, for the majority of the set, the vocals and guitars are pretty good, but as happens with my equipment, the bass and drums get muffled at times. It's not perfect, but it's definitately a listenable show.
For those that follow the band at all, you may know that they perform several songs live that are not on their albums. Many of them are only played live because the band does not have permission to release them. Two of those songs were performed at this show, but per the band's request, they are NOT included here, so please do not ask for them. If you want to hear them for yourself, you can check them out at these upcoming shows:
Friday, July 2nd - Newport Music Hall, Columbus, Ohio (opening for Dream Theater)
Friday, July 30th - G.B. Leighton's Pickle Park, Minneapolis, Minnesota (opening for Dangerous Toys)
